Watercolor Onions

Onions
approx. 3 1/2" x 5" watercolor on paper

Another painting for my KMBW series. This time I painted onions.

I went grocery shopping today and had to buy a white onion for one of our meals. When I was putting it away I realized I had three different kinds of onions in the house. While this may not seem like a momentous occasion, I can assure you it rarely happens here. My mom used to by onions by the bag and potatoes five pounds at a shot. How in the world did she use them all before they went bad?

Anyway, I decided to take advantage of this unusual situation and used the onions for a still life set up. Luckily I didn't need that onion for tonight's meal!

My intention for this painting was to paint quick and loose with a lot of wet-in-wet. Um...yeah...as you can can see, I lost that intention somewhere along the line. And to be honest, I wasn't even that far along when I forgot about it.

I know so many artist who paint wonderful loose, washy watercolors, but man, that's just not me. People say I will loosen up at some point. I can't imagine it. And honestly I like my style. But I also like challenging myself so I keep learning.

Tonight I might have missed out on that challenge, but I was having too much fun to care.

I'm still thinking up a name for this one. I considered "Tearful Menagerie", but I think they look more cheerful than tearful. I'm taking suggestions if you have any.

I can't loosen up either and even though I say I want to it just isn't me. I see things in detail and enjoy painting detail. I love your onions.
On another subject, I use those Debbie Meyer green bags for my 5 lb. bags of potatoes and they keep really well. Those bags are great!

Thanks Dad! I'm really enjoying these little paintings.

Judy, it's funny another local artist I know just said the same thing - she tries to loosen up but just can't. Must be an epidemic. :D As for the bags, I think my mother-in-law uses them, I'll have to try them.

Thanks Vikki! Your comments always make me feel so good.

Love your onions! I can't loosen up either. If it's watercolour, I just can't help pushing the paint around, and if it's coloured pencil, I get lost in capturing the detail, I've decided to stop trying. Clearly it's just not me - I think my textile work may have something to do with it - or maybe it's one of those chicken and egg things!

Great painting Stacy, the contrasts in colour are lovely.

Some of us are created to love detail, some of us are looser. Both have good qualities, but we can't change what we are.

As for potatoes and onions, I have huge quantities of those that I grew and store them in the 'cold room' where they're fine for months. The trick is cool and dark. Not in the fridge, well for onions maybe, but not potatoes.

And 5 pounds of potatoes, well one meal with 6 people at my place and they're gone. :) Nothing lasts around here, they're like gannets.

Stacy, it has been so long since I have been blog visiting and I love the work I see on your blog but I promise I will come back and comment individually on those that you will be posting.

Kay Susan, maybe we should start a group of tight painters. We could call it Details 'R Us. ;)

Jeanette, I'll try moving my onions to the basement. The trick then will be not forgetting they are there! As for potatoes...I think my gang is just not a potato family.

Mary, it is so great to "see" you again! I know you have been busy between hosting workshops and spending time with new grandbabies. I hope you are making time for your own art.

You've captured these onions beautifully, Stacy even if they aren't as loose as you intended. They are gorgeous - particularly the delicate green veins in the white one. I also loved your pears a few posts back.
